Will I Be Eligible for Medicare After Being Approved for Disability

If you are approved for Social Security Disability Benefits, you will be entitled to Medicare coverage, and don’t have to wait to age 65.  You are entitled to Medicare your 25th month after your entitlement for benefits.

Many people will already wait out the time period during the life of their claim, although some will be approved for benefits and will have a gap until their Medicare entitlement, despite receiving their monthly disability benefits payment. If there is a gap until your Medicare coverage, you will receive your packet from Medicare about 3 months prior to being entitled, including your Medicare card.

There is no need to apply for Medicare because Social Security will automatically enroll you for Parts A and B of Medicare.  Part A covers hospital coverage and Part B covers medical coverage.  You may also choose to enroll in Part C and D which will be an additional charge.
