Social Security Disability

Date Last Insured

Many people wait years before filing for disability benefits in hope that their medical conditions will improve allowing them to return back to work.  Many people are also unaware that once you stop working after a period of time (normally up to 5 years) that you loose your disability insurance.

Meaning, after all the years you have worked and all the money you have paid in the system, you may never be eligible to receive it after you loose you insurance for disability.  Most people need to apply for Social Security Disability within 5 years of the last time they worked or they will not be eligible for benefits.

If you are no longer eligible for Social Security Disability your only other option would be SSI (Supplemental Security Income.)  For SSI you must meet both the disability aspect of the claim and also must meet the financial requirements.  Unfortunately, when people wait too long to file for disability they may ultimately prevent themselves from receiving any income from the Social Security Administration until they reach retirement age.
